Living a day at a time

Postby Steve L » Tue May 26, 2009 11:45 am

Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace,Taking as He did, this sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it. Trusting that He will Make all things right if I surrender to His will.

Reflecting on this particular section of the Serenity prayer this morning I was reminded of the necessity of living in the moment. I don't about you but this is one of the most difficult things I do each day. It is easy to live in the past - living with regrets and hurts to and by me. It is relatively easy to get caught up living in the future that I cannot predict, but waste an incredible amount of time worrying about. But to seize the moment - to live Carpe Deum -- is the toughest to do. It is good that this is included in the prayer because without God's help I will lose the moment and live to miss it later...
God gave me two things to learn on this earth before he brings me home: 1. There is a God and 2. I am not him. I am still learning both!

Living one day at a time is so difficult. My mind does not naturally turn that direction at all. I seem to always gravitate to the past or the future. Living in the past is deadly because generally we live with many regrets. Isn't interesting that the litany of regrets is long and loud. We can sit back and with 20/20 hindsight see what we could have done, should have done, would have done. The past is full of if onlys. Living in the future in many ways is playing at being god. Trying to ascertain the results and events before they occur. It is full of I wonder ifs and full of worries about what might or may bes.

To live in the present, a day at a time, means to enjoy all that is today. Put aside all that is yesterday and all that might or might not be and enjoy the moment. Take a look around you. See the beauties and the challenges of the day. This is a day that God has made. It is a day that you have been given to live. Drink in the wonder of another day of life and enter into it with wonder and expectancy.

God give me the ability to forget what lies behind and not get preoccupied with what lies ahead. Give me a firm grasp on this day that you have made. Amen.
