These words are not just empty thoughts like some cosmic cheerleader. Jesus is portrayed in this section of the book of Hebrews as the best, the greatest of all. He is the voice of God to us. The last revelation of the very person and nature of God. The final prophet and the living manifestation of God in the flesh. All of this information pointing to him being the greatest is for the purpose of encouraging us in the process that is later called the discipline of God in Hebrews 12. As his children, redeemed ones, rescued from the curse of chaos that our lives were apart from him, we are to take encouragement in the fact that Jesus has finished the task his Father gave him. That means all the things that God works in my life are not to make me acceptable to him. They are not meant to fix me or to improve upon me. I am already acceptable! I am already pleasing to him. I am already made new. The amazing thing is that all the things of this life work to make what has been done for me and in me a reality that I can experience. Like any surgery it is not pleasant but its result is increased connectedness to God. Jesus has been seated at God's right hand. That means the work is over. Can I ever learn to accept that? Can I ever learn to rest in the finished work of Jesus for me so that as I go through the present pruning I can trust in outcome and the one doing the work? God grant me that grace!
Hebrews 1:1-4
1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
